”What are you wearing?” Noll looked at his twin, who smiled back, a paper hat sitting on his head.

“Isn’t it cool! You want one?” Gene pulled out another from a small bag in his lap.

“No.” Noll replied sternly.

Gene frowned, “Come on, it’s our birthday, it’s special!”

Noll simply stared back at his brother.

“Please?” Gene’s tone was so sickly sweet Noll nearly cringed. “Please?” he repeated this time giving the best puppy eyes he could. Noll glared as Gene continued his onslaught of pleases.

“Fine, if it will make you stop that.” Noll held out his hand.

Triumphantly, Gene handed the over hat over.

Noll sighed and put it on. He felt rather silly but seeing how happy his brother was made it a little more bearable. He only hoped no one else would see him.

“Look what else I got,” Gene pulled out a small cupcake from his bag. “I was only able to get one so we’ll have to split it.”

“You can have it, it’s too sweet for me.” Noll replied.

“Oh just have a bite.” Gene said splitting it in half. “A little piece won’t hurt you.”

Noll had a funny feeling if he refused Gene would once again commence with the begging. Taking half of the half, Noll bit into the cake. Gene was right, it was not bad.

“Happy Birthday Noll!” Gene smiled.

“Happy Birthday Gene.” Noll returned the smile.


It was not often Noll caught himself daydreaming but it did happen on occasion. He was not sure why he remembered this particular birthday; he and Gene certainly had more eventful ones. Maybe it was the fact this one had been the last at the orphanage, the last birthday with simply the two of them. Noll did not know.

It had been years since he had last heard from his brother. This year would probably not be any different.

But even though he could feel the door was closed, Noll knew it was not locked.

Author's Notes: Didnt forget this year! XD I think young Noll and Gene are my favorite characters to write in GH, I do like writing their older selves but this is really untouched in the world of GH so it has so many possiblities which makes writing it super fun. Ran this through word but as always if you see mistakes let me know XD I did proof it but no one beta'd it for me.
